Why is airplane mode so important?
Airplane mode is a setting on your phone or tablet or device that turns the wireless antennas off so they do not emit radiation.
You can still play music (pre downloaded) take pictures and use a lot of features on your phone or device with Airplane mode on and without the antennas on!
You can access AIRPLANE MODE in the settings of your device.
Newer devices have an airplane mode setting that does not turn off every antenna.
So you need to ALSO go to settings and turn off:
- Bluetooth
- Wi-Fi
- 5G
- Hotspot
- Location
- Or any other antennas.
How do I decrease radiation from apps on my phone?
Disable background refresh on apps on your cell phone whenever possible.
Remember that even though you are not using an app on your phone, they will continue to emit wireless when they refresh and sync data. So reducing the constant refreshing of your cell phone reduces the radiation emitted.
Step by Step
For iOS
- Disable background refresh on apps. Go to Settings and then General.
- Then, tap Background App Refresh and toggle it off for apps you don’t need to be working in background.
- Cancel apps you are not using. Sometimes we sign up for free apps and forget about them.
- Go to Settings, then click your name at the top to open your Apple ID settings. From here, click Subscriptions and you’ll see a list of all the apps you’re subscribed to, with the renew dates.
- Then, unsubscribe to apps.
For Android
- Disable background refresh on apps. Find options under the Permissions Manager menu under Privacy within Settings.
- Cancel apps you are not using. Open Settings, click Google, click Manage your Google Account, click Payments & Subscriptions and then select Manage Subscriptions.
- Then, unsubscribe to apps.
How do I send texts without Wi-Fi?
Instead of always using your cell phone to send texts, you can send and receive texts on a hardwired desktop computer, laptop or iPad. Texting from a hardwired computer whenever possible can significantly reduce your daily dose of wireless exposure because it allows you to turn the cell phone off more often.
Step-by-Step
If you have a Mac or iPad:
- Use the application called iMessaging.
- In the Messages app on your Mac, enter your Apple ID and password, then click Sign In.
- Make sure to sign in using the same Apple ID on every device.
- An iPhone in Airplane Mode will not allow you to make or receive phone calls, FaceTime or use iMessage, but these applications will ring/show up on other devices in your home (e.g. a
- hardwired laptop or iPad) signed in with the same Apple ID.
- If you have a PC or want additional options:
If you have an Android or other type of device:
- Microsoft has a free application called mysms to send/receive text messages on your Windows 8 / 10 PC or tablet using your current phone number. Your SMS inbox is synced with your phone and always up to date, no matter from which device you send your messages from from. It provides Automatic sync between your smartphone, tablet and computer, and and call notifications on your PC-—— when you receive a call on your phone and group chat and multimedia support.
- Other available apps include Textnow, TextFree and Mighty TtText. Just search “how to text from a computer” to find the one that works for you.
How do I use a cell phone without wireless radiation or AC electric fields?
Now you know how to use a cell phone with an ethernet cable to eliminate wireless radiation from the cellular network, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on your phone. But did you know that there is an additional option that also reduces AC electric fields (another type of radiation) when using a grounded ethernet cable setup?
Our electronic devices emit AC electric fields continuously that are absorbed by our body when we are within 6-8 feet of a source, like a cell phone or iPad. It is recommended to reduce our long-term, cumulative exposure to non ionizing radiation, whether it be from wireless, AC electric fields or AC magnetic fields that are all prevalent in our environment today.
Before You Start
- Confirm the port on your cell phone. Most cell phones have a Lightning port. Some newer models have a USB-C port.
You Will Need
- Shielded ethernet cable (choose the length you want, a longer one is better to reach your router, unless you have an ethernet port in the wall).
- Lightning to Ethernet Adapter (important to use this adapter since it conveys grounding for AC electric fields, not all adapters do).
- Ethernet Grounding Adapter Kit.
Step-by-Step
- Plug the ethernet adapter into the port on your cell phone. It is the same port that you use to charge your cell phone.
- Plug one end of the ethernet cable that comes with the Ethernet Grounding Adapter Kit into the ethernet port on the Lightning adapter.
- Plug the shielded ethernet cable that you purchased into the other ethernet port on the Ethernet Grounding Adapter Kit.
- Plug the other end of your shielded ethernet cable into an ethernet port on your router.
- Plug the power plug into an outlet in your wall.
- In Settings on your cell phone, you should now see “Ethernet” listed.
- Turn on Airplane mode and turn off WiFi and Bluetooth. This does not happen automatically when you plug in an ethernet cable.
- Place your phone on a table or a stand and use a stylus to avoid exposure to AC magnetic fields emitted by the phone.
How do I use my cell phone without wireless radiation?
You can use your cell phone without wireless radiation and still connect to the internet. In fact, you can do almost everything you do on Wi-Fi on your cell phone but through a corded ethernet connection.
Be aware that most cell phones have multiple antennas that transmit wireless radiation continuously unless the phone is powered off or set to Airplane mode with WiFi and Bluetooth off. You can avoid this wireless exposure by connecting your cell phone to the internet with an ethernet cable.
Before You Start
- Identify the type of port there is on your cell phone so that you can buy the correct adapter. Most cell phones have a Lightning port. Some newer models have a USB-C port.
You Will Need
- A Shielded ethernet cable (choose the length you want, a longer one is better to reach your router, unless you have an ethernet port in the wall, see image here).
- Ethernet Adapter for your phone: either a Lightning to Ethernet Adapter or a USB-C Port to Ethernet Adapter.
Step-by-Step
- Plug the Ethernet adapter into the port on your cell phone. It is the same port that you use to charge your cell phone.
- Plug the ethernet cable into the adapter.
- Plug the other end of the ethernet cable into the router or the ethernet port in your wall.
- In Settings on your cell phone, you should now see “Ethernet” listed.
- Turn on Airplane mode and turn off W-iFi and Bluetooth and any other wireless antennas. Remember that this does not happen automatically when you plug in ethernet.
Things to Know
- Ethernet adapters can sometimes have a short lifespan, meaning if your ethernet connection stops working after a few months, it might be time to buy a new ethernet adapter.
- You will need to unplug this setup to be able to charge your phone.
- Apple does not support sending or receiving phone calls, sending or receiving iMessages, or using FaceTime when a cell phone is in Airplane Mode using an ethernet cable. You can still communicate with others using WhatsApp, Facebook, Messenger and go online using Safari and check email.
- We recommend you use a stylus to avoid exposure to AC magnetic fields emitted by the phone.
There is more you can do and these next steps are especially recommended especially if you are sensitive to electromagnetic exposure.
What About Electric Fields?
Now you know how to use a cell phone with an ethernet cable to eliminate wireless radiation from the cellular network, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on your phone. How do I forward my cell phone to my home landline?
Call forwarding to send calls from your cell phone to your landline when you’re at home is an easy way to reduce the amount of time you spend on your cell phone every day.
Step-by-Step
- Check with your wireless carrier for how to set up call forwarding from your cell phone. For example, if Verizon is your carrier, dial *72 from your cell phone and enter the 10 digit number (including area code) of your landline (e.g.*72 123-456-7899).
- Then you can turn off call forwarding when you leave the house by dialing *73 on your cell phone (for Verizon, check with other carriers for instructions).
- Remember to activate Airplane mode, or better yet power off your cell phone, or put it in another room when you are at home using your landline.
- You can also forward your landline to your cell phone when you go out, just ask your service provider for instructions.
How do I talk on the phone at home?
Short Answer: Install a landline. It’s a great wireless-free option!
If you have a copper landline, keep it. This is the best option.
However, in most communities copper landlines are no longer available. Thankfully, there are other ways to get a landline.
You can either
- Get a phone line though your service provider
- Use Voice Over Internet (VOIP)
Then, once you have a corded telephone in your home, you can forward your cell phone to your home telephone line. Prefer the corded telephone for long voice calls, instead of the cell phone.
You Will Need
- A safe corded (not cordless) phone. Ensure you connect a corded phone to the telephone line, not a cordless phone. Remember, cordless phones emit wireless continuously. So be sure the telephone you choose has no wireless capability. If the corded phone comes with an additional cordless phone, find another model. We recommend getting a longer headset cord for the phone so you can conveniently move around rooms.
Step-by-Step
Get Phone Line Service through your internet provider
- Call your communications provider to make an appointment for a technician to come to your home to install a telephone jack (one jack per room, in any room where you want to use the phone) for a landline.
- Use your landline to make calls with a corded, not a cordless phone.
Use Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP)
- Purchase hardware that you connect to your internet modem. Then, you pay a small monthly fee. There are several companies (Magic Jack, Ooma or Vonage) that supply VOIP equipment that you can connect directly to your computer with an ethernet cable.
- Select VOIP equipment that does not have any wireless capability. Usually there is an option, confirm with a phone call to the company.
-
Another way people reduce costs is to use Skype or another online application for phone calls and to do this using ethernet, not Wi-Fi. For example, you can FaceTime to someone using a wired computer, instead of Wi-Fi.
Educate friends and family on hardwiring their computer so they are also wireless radiation free.
